the distances employees travel/cover while working Explanation: I am not aware of an exact term, so this is how I would put it. :-) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 33 mins (2004-09-12 02:34:50 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- See no. 7 here: http://www.co.boulder.co.us/sheriff/employment/deputy/jail_d... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 40 mins (2004-09-12 02:41:05 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Perhaps, \"the time required to perform tasks\" (they are talking about shaving off 3 hours a day)... :-) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 41 mins (2004-09-12 02:42:00 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- See: http://www.google.com/search?hl=de&ie=UTF-8&q="time required... |

s.u. Explanation: I don't think that they are referring to the distances the technicians have to travel but rather to the operating processes, work procedures which took longer before the new system was implemented - see "lückenlos rückverfolgen" in the sentence - that saves them time and money |

sequense of operations Explanation: das ist eine Möglichkeit -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 52 mins (2004-09-12 02:53:41 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I am quiet sure -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 54 mins (2004-09-12 02:55:13 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- sequence, pardón |

job flow time Explanation: The unit is hours, so it is the time saved in the job flow process. Google search produces only 139 hits, but they are native speaker and expert sites. |

motion distances / action distances Explanation: Action distance generally describes the horizontal movement of the body. It is used to analyse all spatial movement or actions of the fingers, hands and /or feet either loaded or unloaded. Since the beginning of the 20th century organisations have recognised the importance of determining the time it takes to carry out operations and processes. Formal time study quickly became the accepted technique for measuring work throughout the industrialised world. There were always people however, who believed time study had weaknesses, specifically the subjectivity of performance rating. Included amongst this group were the Gilbreths, Frank and his wife Lillian. Frank Gilbreth in particular felt far more could be gained by methods improvement than by simply measuring existing practice. He spent most of his working life developing tools and techniques for recording, examining, analysing and developing improved working methods. They ranged from simple techniques providing an overview to the highly complex technique of Micro Motion Study. Through the research he and his wife carried out using both still and motion photography they established all human work consisted of a relatively small range of movements they called Basic Motions. By filming people working and then analysing the films frame by frame they were able to focus on the movements used to perform a task. They would analyse the effectiveness of the movement pattern and develop improvements by reducing the number and type of movements required. To enable them to record the motion pattern from the film to a detailed chart for further analysis, Gilbreth designed simple symbols to represent each basic motion. He named these symbols ‘Therbligs’, their family name spelt backwards. It was based on the concept taught in physics that work is the product of force times distance (W = f x d), or more simply, work is the displacement of a mass or object. |

operating procedures Explanation: This is a slight change from the "wege" part, but it is more general and can include both steps between processes, product paths and delivery times, all of which are included in "shortened operating procedures". |

ergonomic steps or increments Explanation: Akin to a shot in the dark. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 hrs 24 mins (2004-09-12 13:25:53 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- OR: in the normal course of work (or: their work) |

human inspection (time) Explanation: as opposed to automatic inspection (don't know the correct industrial term either, though) now that some of the processes are monitored automatically, the technicians don't need to check as many. IOW I also understand it to mean the time the inspectors spend "on their feet". BTW, there's sth. wrong with the calculation. If it's a saving of three hours a day for 250 days at an hourly rate of 190, the total should be 3 times 47500 = 142500 per year. |
