agree Kyriaki Ailamaki : I agree with the translation είλωτας, σκλάβος, δούλος (eelotas, sklavos, doulos), but for the translation of the phrase I propose "H γη καλλιεργούταν από είλωτες, ή δούλους που ανήκαν σε πoλιτείες-κράτη".

Sure. I thought I would use "επεξεργαζόταν" since the English verb is "worked," not "cultivated" -- but agree.

Σωστότατη. Ευχαριστώ για την διόρθωση.
agree alexliz : Yes, it was «πόλεις-κράτη» and not «πολιτείες». For the verb for "worked" I would have used «δουλευόταν». BTW am I 8 yrs late in joining this thread?

είλωτες

Τhe word "eelotes" means "slaves", term particualrly used in ancient Sparta in ancient Sparta. In ancient Athens they were called "doulee"(enslaved people).
The full translation is:
Τη γη τη δούλευαν οι είλωτες, ή οι δούλοι που είχαν στην ιδιοκτησία τους οι πόλεις-κράτη.
I think "city/states" should actually be either "city/state" or "cities/states"; both in the same number.
