LAB number

English to Spanish Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
¡Buenas tardes!
Estoy traduciendo un texto donde se habla de la transferencia de documentos farmacéuticos de un programa a otro, y no puedo encontrar a qué se refiere la sigla LAB. Copio debajo la oración donde aparece.

Documents have been transferred to the new software program and each STM given a ***LAB*** number.

¿Sabrían decirme qué significa la sigla?
Tengo que entregar mañana domingo a última hora (GMT -3).

¡Muchísimas gracias por su ayuda!

Due to the lack of context, I'll leave the acronym and send an explanatory note to my client. Thank you all for your suggestions!
Danik 2014 Aug 31, 2014:
Sure!
Judith Armele Aug 30, 2014:
I'm not sure but i'll post my suggestion. :)
Danik 2014 Aug 30, 2014:
Sure, Judith, that would be a possibility too.
Charles Davis Aug 30, 2014:
@ Lorena No, you didn't at all! My reply reads as though I might have taken offence, but of course I haven't! No reason to, anyway; it's a perfectly legitimate question. As I say, I don't know what these LAB numbers are or why they're being assigned to documents, but that's what the context seems to be suggesting: that the STMs are documents being transferred to the software system.
lorenab23 Aug 30, 2014:
@ Charles Oops I hope I did not come across like a (you know what). I was trying to figure out if it was plausible to give each STM a LAB number. So I got my answer :-)
Charles Davis Aug 30, 2014:
@ Lorena Well, if you have a better idea, by all means post it :) But I think so, yes. A Standard Test Method is a procedural document. There will be many STMs in a pharmaceutical laboratory, covering different procedures (as there will be many SOPs; I've translated some of these myself). So it fits the context of transferring documents to the software system. I can't see anything implausible about each Standard Test Method document being given a LAB number. I don't know exactly what they mean by the latter, but STMs and SOPs do of course have reference numbers. Maybe there are several labs and the STMs are specific to one or other of them? But yes, I do think Standard Test Method is the likeliest meaning of STM in this context.
lorenab23 Aug 30, 2014:
@ Charles Going by this question, do you think that your answer to the previous question (standard test method) still applies?
Charles Davis Aug 30, 2014:
@ Melina ¿No será más bien LAB por laboratory?
