(Atmosphere of) peasantry / like working with a bunch of peasants Explanation: Hi flint2, You don't provide much context, but I'll take a punt and guess that your term is being used in a *derogatory* sense. country people Explanation: To me, farm people would suggest industrious and simple. Country people, on the other hand, would suggest easy going and friendly. I guess which you would use, depends on the context. |

sedentary Explanation: This word describes agriculture-based society. Agricultural people must stay in same place, therefore not mobile (compare this to American society in general. It is called mobile-society -- at least used to). This is a good word to describe company's atomosphere too. Sedentary agriculturists are also industrious people, and nothing is indicated to be despondent and lazy. However, docility could be. |

Like a farmers society. / They have a (typical) farming culture. Explanation: It is quite common among cultural anthropologists and ethnologists to compare 農耕民族 such as East Asian people and 狩猟民族 such as European people. There are arguments that the current cultural differences between ethnic groups can be traced to back to the types of societies of their ancestors. Farmers tend to place communal benefits over individual needs because agriculture required cooperation. Hunters tend to value individual initiatives. .... So this one word sentence means that the atmosphere of this workplace is like that of farmers. It can be positive, negative or both depending on the context. If it has a positive sense, it probably means that people prefer to cooperate, help each other, ... for the benefit of the workforce as a whole. If it has a negative sense, it means that people do not take initiatives, innovations are less likely to take place, .... It might also mean that people tend to avoid arguments, .... As a translation, I suggest following the convention among scholars because these words come from the academia.
