O panorama atual da preservação do patrimônio cultural no Brasil atinge uma condição jamais vista anteriormente, não somente no que diz respeito aos bens materiais imóveis, que sempre estiveram na dianteira das discussões e ações, mas também em relação aos bens móveis e integrados e, principalmente, aos bens imateriais.
Porém, a paulatina popularização da cultura e o aumento considerável das possibilidades de incentivo para trabalhos nessa área – que incluem, entre outros, os processos de conservação, restauração, revitalização e requalificação – têm ainda resultado em ações muitas vezes empíricas, sem o devido embasamento técnico e teórico que os profissionais envolvidos precisam ter pelas próprias especificidades que o assunto exige.
