Bybee (1985: 13-17) pontua dois critérios determinantes na expressão flexional: relevância e generalidade. Um alto nível de relevância entre dois elementos quer dizer que o significado de um pode afetar o de um outro a ponto de alterar ou modificar conteúdo semântico do segundo.

Bybee (1985:13-17) gives two determinate criteria for the inflectional expression: relevance and generality. A high level of relevance between the two elements signifies that the significance of one can affect that of another to the point of altering or modifying the semantic content of the second.
