stolyaris Apr 18, 2005:
Dear Henrik! You must have been confusing things: Razor in Armenian is "stanok". The following three words "srich, britva, lesvi" are used in Armenian to define the same thing "changeble blade". The labirint in where you have lost is called "a blade EDGE"
Henrik Pipoyan Apr 17, 2005:
Right, the Russian word has probably been lezviye which means a razor blade. Though a blade without a razor sounds like the cats smile without the cat in Alices adventures, but still its the blade which does the job.
stolyaris Apr 17, 2005:
It sounds very close to the Russian word "lezvie" which again means "blade".
Non-ProZ.com Apr 17, 2005:
I should've included this with the explanation, the English word they used for this object was "lezbi" but it didn't sound quite right to me..
Non-ProZ.com Apr 17, 2005:
if somebody said they cut themself, on their hand, with a "britva" does it mean they cut themself shaving their hand?

razor

Yes, it means razor in Russian, it’s used for shaving, but it can also harm, depending on how you use it. There is a special way of fighting with razors, a really nasty spectacle!

No, it means that they committed suicide or attempted to commit suicide by cutting the veins of their arm.

disagree stolyaris : What I really want to understand is how anyone could commit a suicide with a razor(?!), the primary aim of which is to ensure the safe razing? The blade and not a razor is used for this reason.

“razor” in Armenian is “atseli”. The “blade” is the cutting part of any instrument, i.e., a “razor blade” and a “razor edge” are the same, at least this is what all the dictionaries say so far.

The attempted suicides are often committed with blades but not razors...

Shaving blades are often used for sharpening pencils. During this process one can cut his hand with the blade as well. So committing suicides is not the only option. Blades are used for a variety of ways: for windows cleaning, seams cutting etc. In the U.S. there are special safe blades, one side of which is protected not to harm yourself in any of the above operations.
