Lots of googles for 'semi-solid' in combination with sludge.

Not quite sure if \'semi-solid\' is the correct term, but \'steekvast\' is apparently related to water-borne material (e.g. sludge) that has been dehydrated. Alternatives may \'dewatered\' or \'dehydrated\' material.

: can't be far off the term. I lost a 36 page glossary for this field when my hard disk broke.

Thanks writeaway! And sorry to hear about your hard disk. That kind of thing is SO frustrating...

: FWIW, my daughter's suggestion (her Dutch is better than mine) is 'something you can poke something into, but it keeps its shape (i.e. with the hole) afterwards'. Mud and (dewatered) sludge would be excellent examples.

Yep, I was thinking along those lines too. Even considered something like 'pokeproof' ;-)

: heel aannemelijk: je kunt er iets insteken en dan blijft het rechtop staan. Ik denk hierbij (heel onschuldig) aan havermoutpap waar de lepel in rechtop blijft staan.

Comment: "Yes, I used dehydrated in the end, fit perfectly in context."

ladderproof; runproof; run-resistant
I believe the words "ladderproof, runproof or run-resistant" are the English equivalents of 'steekvast'.
I got this from a lexicon found on the internet:
www.centexbel.be/Fr/lexicon_R.htm.
I hope this is of any help.

See e.g. this I found via Linguee:
The residues are solidified sludge, solidified waste and end-products of immobilisation and neutralisation. indaver.com
=
De restproducten zijn gesolidificeerd slib, steekvast gemaakte afvalstoffen en eindproducten van immobilisatie en neutralisatie.

The glossary now seems to available from: https://www.centexbel.be/en/lexicon (but I can't find the old stuff in it anymore).
