French term

unités agronomiques diverses

French to English Science Agriculture Soil
I'm having problems with this whole sentence, but particularly with a good way to express the phrase above.

The whole sentence is:
'Les sols correspondent à des unités agronomiques diverses (sols caractérisés par une faible teneur en matière organique et des sols hydro morphes) ayant subi depuis plusieurs décennies un état de dégradation avancée.'

It is taken from a text about Burkina Faso and is a paragraph from the section on 'Situation Géographique'. There isn't really any more relevant context.

So far my draft translation (which still needs a lot of work!) is as follows:
'The soils suit different types of agriculture (soils which are characterised by low-grade organic material and hydro morph soils) having, over several decades, reached a state of advanced erosion. '

Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. :-)

Thanks, Jo, I think between both Charlie's excellent suggestions and my rearrangements future visitors to this question will have ample choices. Good luck with this.

re-phrasing suggestion

'The soils (low-grade organic materials and hydro-morph) suit different types of agriculture and have reached a state of advanced erosion over several decades. '

One possibility : )

Since it is a science text, as few words as necessary and possible would be my choice here.

or - \"...are now at an advanced state of erosion reached after several decades.\" another possibility.

French term (edited): units agronomiques diverses

various types of (crop) farm

agronomic - of the soil & the growing of crops
So, an agronomic unit = crop growing unit = farm (loosely)

I don't think "correspondre a" means "suit" here. If you ignore the distraction of the brackets for a moment, you have:

soil(s) that "correspodent à" various types of crop farms that have suffered from decades of erosion ( des unités agronomiques diverses ayant subi depuis plusieurs décennies un état de dégradation avancée.

I just think it means "correspond with", i.e. show all the features of, match up with. It's hard to see how they could be making a case of heavily-eroded soil being "suited" to any kind of crop growing, other than maybe cacti :-)

And the bit in brackets explains exactly how the soil "corresponds" with this, i.e. low *levels* (not grade) of organic material, etc.
Peer comment(s):

agree df49f (X) : farming unit is used in this contexte - and agree also with correspond - obviously these units with eroded soil are not "suited" for growing much of anything anymore
