a "lance" is a special attachment for a vacuum cleaner, to allow you to reach awkward places. Lances can be of many shapes and sizes. When attached to a vacuum, the suction is diverted into the lance. There is an opening or aperture at either end of the lance. One attaches to the vacuum, the other is used for suction.
