It is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown cause that affect primarily the axial skeleton. ......... Although Ankylosing Spondylitis is now the name accepted for the disease, many synonyms have been used in the past, such as rhizomelic spondylitis, Marie-Strumpell’s disease, pelvospondylitis ossificans and spondylitis ossificans ligamentosa (6). Rheumatoid Spondylitis was the name used by the American Rheumatism Association. The name was then rejected due to various reasons, including that the disease doesn’t represent rheumatoid arthritis of the spine, the ossifications and calcifications seen in AS are not seen in RA, and the predominance of RA in women while the disease of concern predominates in men, especially those who are young, in addition to other various reasons (RF, rheumatoid nodules) (7). Det finns arkeologiska belägg för att tillståndet förekommit sedan urminnes tider. Den äldsta bevarade beskrivningen av ankyloserande spondylit gjordes av den irländske läkaren Bernad Connor 1697. Den ryske läkaren Vladimir Bechterew beskrev tillståndet 1892.
