**Noting** of bills dishonoured on first presentation for payment or acceptance, or at maturity for accepted bills, is the initial action taken by notaries public necessary to hold open a subsequent right to protest. The act of **noting** consists of the notary’s initials, the date, the noting charges, and a mark referring to the notary’s register, all being written on the bill itself.
A protest is the official certificate given by notaries public in respect of the dishonour of bills of exchange, evidencing formal presentation of bills to drawees and the stated reason for dishonour. Such certificates will normally preserve the legal rights of recourse both to drawees/acceptors and to the prior endorsers and drawers of bills.

I know that, in this case, "protest" is equivalent to "protesto", but I can't find an adequate equivalent for "noting".
