I think वृत्ति would be more appropriate in many contexts, though व्यवसाय, पेशा etc can also be used depending upon the contexts, however they are more closed towards 'profession', 'business' etc.

Transliterate the term


Explanation:
Answer suggested by 'Dr. Shrawan' doesn't contain the whole stuffs of the term 'career', involved in it, so I will prefer it to retain it as transliterated. However, Dr. Shrawan's translation can be used in many contexts.
Also, 'vritti' as suggested by Priya can be mistaken as 'habit/nature'. Vritti cannot be an appropriate option in my view.
