transabdominal ultrasound (TRANZ-ab-DAH-mih-nul UL-truh-SOWND)

A procedure used to examine the organs in the abdomen. An ultrasound transducer (probe) is pressed firmly against the skin of the abdomen. High-energy sound waves from the transducer bounce off tissues and create echoes. The echoes are sent to a computer, which makes a picture called a sonogram. Also called abdominal ultrasound.

1.There is no need to use unnecessary words to distinguish two interchangeable terms. If we consider to translate the word “ transabdominal” in “ transabdominal ultrasound” by using “بطريق جدار البطن ”, should we use “بطريق جدار البطن” to translate “abdominal” in “abdominal ultrasound”?

2.The nature of ultrasound itself indicates that the ultrasound waves will penetrate the abdominal wall to the abdominal cavity and then reach the organs in the abdomen. And by mentioning ultrasound, the meaning of “trans-” is automatically included.

3.we are translating a term as a whole, not a word on its own, not explaining what that single word means, not explaining the meaning of that prefix “ trans-”. So there is no need to use more words to deal with that “prefix” while the meaning of “transabdominal” is interchangeable with “abdominal” in this context.

Conclusion:
transabdominal ultrasound scan= abdominal ultrasound scan

  -> as pointed out above, they are interchangable in this context, I am also presenting my point of view based on my previous medical training and experience.Just ask any doctor in a clinic or hospital, if these two terms are interchangable in this context .
