Explanation:
This would refer to a microscopy analysis of cross sections of the tissue. In Swedish, you would call a cross section of tissue (usually put on a microscope slide, stained, and then studied in a microscope) a "snitt", or more specifically a "vävnadssnitt".

If they would study each section, one after another, they would be called consecutive cross sections. In this case, they are not necessarily consecutive, so I would call them "close cross sections".

Do a search on "cross section microscopy" for more info.
