I would translate these two terms as diesel in English but I need to differentiate between the two terms if possible, if there is a difference!

Diesel is used (named after the engineer) to indicate the type of engine. Hence diesel fuel is more correct or fuel for a diesel engine.
Most French people use diesel for gas-oil.

Le gazole ou diesel ou gas-oil, ou encore gasoil, est un carburant pour moteur Diesel. Physiquement, c'est un fioul léger et, réglementairement, un carburant (norme fiscale) issu du raffinage du pétrole.

Le mot « gazole » est issu du mot anglais « gasoil » (fioul, mazout). Ce terme est surtout utilisé en France. Dans d'autres pays, comme la Belgique, le Canada et la Suisse, le produit est connu comme « diesel », mot issu du nom de Rudolf Diesel, l'inventeur du moteur Diesel, qui fonctionne habituellement avec ce carburant.
