это, простите, и по русски неверное словоупотребление:
"красной нитью" пожет проходить что-то в чем-то, а не СЛЕДОВАТЬ за чем-то
"красной нитью" - to run all (through), to stand out
А нужно бы сформулировать These were the years of global changes, and the ghost (or phantom) of 9/11 followed them persistently (неотступно)
