Something to do with using a spear to make a hole in the ground to plant a seed, but I just cannot think of the English equivalent.

As a native Russian, and as a good granddaughter of my skillful gardener-Granny, I am quite sure it is a fair equivalent to say 'stick-farming', for in Russian it sounds almost the same. There are also such terms in Russian as "тычковая керамика", "тычковое оружие" and so on.

I believe that the best translation will have to include "planting hole/holes", something like "agriculture using planting holes" as in the following example:
