English term

carpet

English to Spanish Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering Acoustics
The 'carpet' level is essentially a broad background amplitude level which is spread over all frequencies. This will generally be at a lower amplitude level than any line frequencies within the spectrum.

Carpet level is a term referring to the amount of energy that is spread amongst the frequencies that are not the main peaks of an FFT, and is caused by random noise or broadband excitation.

In general, when the amplitude of the FFT lines remains within a confined area in a graph, that would be regarded as the carpet level.

Discussion

Flavio Granados F Jan 7, 2014:

Is what is really means to say - but if I were you, I would wait for a native to see if there is a standard phrase, I'm just 'creating'.

As the source itself goes on to explain the English term " 'carpet' level", and so will the Spanish, I don't imagine that it is a very standard term.

I was thinking along the lines of...."spread over all frequencies" >> "covers all frequencies"

Note from asker:
Thanks for your answer. However, there is nothing being covered. "Carpet" is an area within an FFT graph that represents frequency vs. amplitude. It only resembles a carpet in that it is not flat.
