English term

Nude (art)

English to Malay Art/Literary Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nude_(art)

The translation will be used as a heading in a website.

I do not think it proper to translate it as 'Bogel/Telanjang' for Malay audience?

Discussion

D. I. Verrelli Aug 15, 2019:
"tubuh manusia" (2) There is another potential issue with "tubuh manusia" that I didn't expect.

I had thought this was a very promising idea that definitely conveyed the required meaning — until I searched for images that came up for my idea of "seni badan" (and the same for "seni tubuh" and "lukisan tubuh").

As mentioned in the preceding Discussion post, the expression can also appear in connection with pornography, and could be misunderstood by readers that way. (As could "bogel" or "telanjang", of course).

On the other hand, it can also be used — against my expectation — to refer to clothed bodies, and so could create a misapprehension in readers (which wouldn't happen with "bogel" or "telanjang").
Example:

This entire essay is like that.
D. I. Verrelli Aug 15, 2019:
"tubuh manusia" (1) I am still concerned that "lukisan tubuh/badan" and "seni tubuh/badan" can be misunderstood as "body art" (art painted/drawn onto skin). I guess that problem won't occur with "fotografi", but not all of the art involved is photography.

Another variation would be e.g. "penggambaran tubuh manusia", which doesn't seem possible to misunderstand as "body art".
Even this doesn't completely remove possibility of readers getting the wrong impression, as this innocuously intended phrase could also be used in other contexts:

I think overall the question of who precisely the audience will be is an important one.
Clearly it will be Malay readers. Even so, the best solution could vary for school students versus university students, or the general public versus visual artists, and so on.

My recommendation would be to go down to the nearest library in Malaysia and check out some Malay-language art books there and see what they use.

lukisan tubuh/tubuh manusia

I have been translating a series of material in the fine arts, and have found it works to use "tubuh" or "tubuh manusia". I won't say I'm completely confident, but think about it: "tubuh" refers to the human body, and no one would imagine a clothed body. Plus it has none of the sexual or lurid connotations that "nude" precisely avoids. You could say "lukisan tubuh" or "fotografi tubuh manusia" or "seni tubuh manusia" and in my opinion it works in a way that "bogel/telanjang" do not.
Peer comment(s):

neutral D. I. Verrelli : It's a good idea. I had thought of "seni badan" ...but that seemed to correspond to "body art" (art painted/drawn onto skin). When I search now online for images with the phrase "seni tubuh" or "lukisan tubuh", it also shows pictures of body art.

(seni) bogel

I am not sure, but there has to be a word used, and Malaysian Wikipedia is using "bogel" (since 2011 or 2012).

https://ms.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seni_bogel
(Contrary to the article, "figurenude panjang" seems to be hardly used. https://www.bing.com/search?q=+"figurenude panjang" )

https://ms.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fotografi_bogel

Bidang fotografi bogel berbeza

If you're still really concerned that not just images but even the word "bogel" could be offensive or shocking to your audience, or that they might misunderstand it, then would "(seni) orang tidak/tak berpakaian" be any better???

"Seni badan" and "seni tubuh" seem to be used to describe "body art" (art painted/drawn onto skin).

Would it help to add an adjective indicating respectful/polite/decorous/discreet?
(seni) bogel halus
(seni) bogel bersopan
(seni) bogel beradab
(seni) bogel bijaksana
This is brainstorming, to provide some more options for you.

Another idea would be to use a euphemism. I don't know what it would be in Malay, but in English perhaps something like "people/person in their natural state".

Any point to add "artistik", as in "(seni) bogel artistik"?

One more thought: "seni anatomis". This also suggests the body, without any sexual connotation — but it's not very idiomatic, and might be interpreted as relating to medical artwork.
Note from asker:
Thank you for your genuine interest to help with the term. I believe in an encyclopaedia (like in the Wikipedia), it is acceptable to translate to 'bogel', although it still rings negatively to Malay ears and psyche, but since this word is used in the context of a paid website, I prefer to avoid all the negative connotation that may come with the word (not suitable for cultural context in marketing /advertising something to the Malay at large).
