Discussion

Fuad Yahya Jul 19, 2001:
How many are they? Specifically, are they two or more?
Fuad Yahya Jul 19, 2001:
If orally, what is the spoken dialect of your daughter's care taker? Where are they from?
Fuad Yahya Jul 19, 2001:
If yes, will you be printing it out or handwriting it?
Fuad Yahya Jul 19, 2001:
Will you be expressing your gratitude orally or in writing? If in writing, can your computer display Arabic text?

Here are a few expressions used in my town to express gratitude for a favor:

1. JAZAKUM ALLAHU KHAYRAN
جزاكم الله خيراً

2. JAZAKUM ALLAHU KHAYR AL-JAZA
جزاكم الله خير الجزاء

3. SHAKARA ALLAHU LAKUM AL-SA’Y
شكر الله لكم السعي

4. SHAKARA ALLAHU SA’YAKUM
شكر الله سعيكم

Too bad these expressions are dying out in many regions. I am partial to these expressions because of their richness and authenticity. For someone who just wants a quick, all-purpose thank-you, these phrases may be too cumbersome. SHUKRAN would then be the standby phrase.

Thank you in general is:
shookran شكراً
shookran is usually enough. it is used to thank "one person" or "two" or more..
if you want to be more specific, you could say:
shookran lakoma (two persons)
شكرا لكما
shookran lakom (three persons and over)
شكرا لكم
or: ashkorokoma (two persons) أشكركما
ashkorokom (three and over) أشكركم
to say thank you very much:
shookran jazeelan شكرا جزيلا
