English term

Return Account (or Notice)

English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s) Contracting
Whenever the contractor is required by the terms of the Main contract to give any return account or notice to the Engineer or to the Employer, the Subcontractor shall ... give similar return, account or notice in writing to the Contractor.

Account here is more of a statement than of the usual bank term (though sounds the same).

I couldn't get definitions online.

I have placed both terms as they appear to be synonymous here (repeated twice). I hope you would provide references with your answers.

Could be right, Lorenab23 When I looked up all the meanings for "return" I found it nearly bearing the same meaning as account. thanks for the hint.
lorenab23 Oct 23, 2009:
@ Samir I believe there is a comma missing on the first portion of the sentence.
It should be return, account or notice as it shows up on the second portion of the sentence. In the case of return that is simply an answer, an account is a report
re·turn (ri tʉrn′),intransitive verb: 4.to answer; reply; retort
ac·count (ə ko̵unt′) transitive verb: 7.a report; description; story

As lorenab23 has pointed out above, there should be a comma between return and account, since they are two different terms, plus there is a similar sentence "the Subcontractor shall ... give similar return, account or notice in writing to the Contractor."

Return in this case refers to an official report, especially of the financial condition of a company.

Account, on the otherhand, like you mentioned, is a verbal or written report, description, or narration of some occurrence, event, etc.

Yes. May be you are right there and I will reconsider the sentence in light of what lorenab23 said. Many thanks, lorenab23 and Yasutomo.

Question
I have a Zales account that I did not keep up with and it has been turned over for collection. Zales at one time offered to match a payment up to $250, but I couldn't afford it.

Now that I could afford that option and get my account current it is with a collection agency who tells me I must pay the full amount or settle for more than I can afford. Is it possible to force the collection agency to return this to Zales and try to negotiate with Zales again?
