Danish term

punkthus

Danish to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
Punkthuse kan opføres med en dybde på indtil 18m og med et bebygget areal på indtil 260m2.

I thinks it is a building of flats or offices built around a central staircase or an adjoining staircase but I can't find the English equivalent for it.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jan 12, 2006:
Hello Michele

Thanks for your answer. I had seen your original answer when you initially put it on and didn't think it was any less correct than the one I chose. However, before getting any replies I had to deliver the translation back and "tower block" was what I figured would be closest. It was only when you pointed out you'd given the same (chosen) answer in an added note that I realised I should have picked your answer and thanked you as well. It was your original answer that appeared in the list for grading. So thanks again.

tower block

I wonder if this is actually a Scandinavian concept which will make it difficult to find an exact replica of such a building in the English-speaking world. I think it would also cover both eventualities as to what is contained therein: residential or commercial.
This picture on the web site provided makes me think that tower block might "fit the bill" (slight, poor, pun intended!)

neutral Michele Fauble : I suggested 'tower block' in my note added at 7 hrs 39 mins.

Sorry, Michele, that I was awarded the Kudos. I think I probably only read your description heading. Hope you will keep commenting, even though you may feel cheated this time! Best regards.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Bill. I think you're right about it being a particularly Scandinavian concept, so tower block should cover any eventualities."

Detached Houses

The glossary below explains that a "punkthus" is a fritliggende hus and there is a possibly useful list of house types in the wikipedia.
