Dutch term

collectiviteitsgedachte

Dutch to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general) polder model
This is one of those terms that describes the Dutch mindset, and I'm having a bit of difficulty with an acceptable rendering in English. The context is: because of technicalities, certain categories of employees do not qualify for certain minor benefits under a very complex pension scheme. However, they are still expected to pay the full contributions. The reason cited is "Vanuit de collectiviteitsgedachte moet volgens het pensioenfonds wel premie worden betaald".

I was thinking of something with 'collective responsibility', but I'm a bit doubtful of whether this captures the real meaning...

Can anyone help me out?

Group perspective

Pension schemes often cater for groups of people, such as those employed by a company or group of companies. I think that this "collectiviteitsgedachte" refers to that aspect.

consensus

Literal translation: 'collective thought/opinion' which to me translates into 'consensus'.

'solidarity' thinking

I doubt it if this refers to "poldermodel" (which refers to a specific way to come to agreements by consultation etc.)
The first thing that comes to my mind reading this text is that it refers to 'principles of solidarity' or '.. (basis of) collectivity'

Misschien refereert het aan \"priciple of equal treatment\"

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : solidarity principle (equal treatment it is not).

thanks Tina, agree (but still longing for an expert opinion)
agree Ken Cox : As good as you'll get (solidarity is also a bit of a foreign concept in English-speaking countries, especially in the good ol' US of A).

In the interest of the common good

This is a common expression that covers this concept in this case. In some other contexts it does not hold as nicely, but I think it is what you are looking for in this case.

The rational seems to be that if these employees do not pay into the pension fund they are depriving the government of funds to provide for a more equal distribution of resources in the society as a whole. A case of redistributive justice.
Peer comment(s):

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : I think this would work as well.
