research can have different aims/purposes

From the context you give, this seems to be a possibility.

can have a number of different forms / research can be of many different types

Declined
"...Forschung kann verschiedene Formen annehmen..."

That is a fairly literal translation, which I do not like much, because research has methods and procedures, as well as subject areas, but no form. The Dutch "vormen" is here however used as an abstraction for the various types of research, which is probably best rendered as "research can be of many different types".

come in many guises

Declined
One idiomatic way of translating this is 'to come in many guises' or 'come in many shapes and sizes'.

E.g.:
-> "Crooks come in many guises:
- Always ask to see some identification.
- All Council employees and contractors have ID cards with photographs -ask to see them.
- Don't let callers in if you have any doubts"

-> "Because Stress can come in so many guises, can be caused by many different things and can manifest itself in a myriad of ways we are using the following definition..."

In the absence of the complete text,I assume that the 'research' here is in a humorous context.
