You have found an uncommon Dutch sentence, which is figurative. When you view here all answers you can see also language is made here and that's very normal. Translators forget sometimes, all people are also language makers. Some are specialist, the writers and some politicians. Comics and yes WE.

I like the sound of - by their mother's matter. And the distance to the real meaning is nice large as well. In dutch and in english you have to think.

I don\'t like slippers or maybe in a very old picture. Slippers belong to me to better mother, maybe someone who hits them wiith a slipper out of love. Why not?

Is it a very old picture, Sammi? For the neglecting of children is from all times. Does the hurrying and neglecting mother of this time wear slippers?

I think we have not only to translate the literal meaning. That\'s for technical translation sometimes good, but neither always. Also scientists write literature. Lovely to read then.

No one can tell if something is good English, as soon as you know how many English dialects are spoken and written. At some places like the universities English is boiling, yes there\'s work to do. English is a very awake language, of course living as well.

Is what I would guess, although the syntax of the Dutch is wacky. Maybe it's a typo? You get the picture, though - a mother in a housecoat, who never leaves the house and therefore never has to put on shoes. As I said, though, I'm just guessing.

The strange thing is, I've heard of or read the expression, but cannot find anything in Google, or in any of my reference books. I feel it is a standard expression used by social workers and implies a lot, which could be expression by the above standard expression "neglected and abused".

I feel that abuse is also implied, by a mother who doesn't leave the house for whatever reason and therefore always wears slippers. Often, if acting up, children in these types of ' families' would get whacked with a slipper, or 'slof'.

Uit zijn slof schieten, can either mean, losing one's patience, or, on the other end of the spectrum, be generous when not expected.

Het werd serieuzer toen hij vertelde waar we moeten op letten als we kwaad zijn op iemand. Willen we de andere klein krijgen, of willen we dat hij naar ons luistert ? Zelden of nooit krijg je nog een complimentje voor wat je gepresteerd hebt. In plaats daarvan krijg je meerdere keren per dag een standje of verwijt dat je er weer helemaal naast zat. Het meeste van wat je aangewreven wordt vergeet je (gelukkig) snel. Wat echter wel blijft hangen is een rottig gevoel. Er hoeft dan weinig meer te gebeuren of je schiet uit je slof....

Sammi, is this in a context for children of muslim mothers who cannot, or won\'t, leave the house\' (hence the skippers), or by mothers with a substance abuse history who don\'t take care of their children. It could be both, so I went for a pretty standard expression in the States. Americans are quick to put labels on people; tend to be pretty judgemental, whereas in the Netherlands social worker are more understanding and tend to euphemistically describe things.

Merk op dat wij in het Nederlands en Engelsen in het Engels alles kunnen zeggen en schrijven, zolang we niet te vreemd gaan. Taal is zeker ook creatief, literatuur, gedichten, maar ook slogans en nieuwe vooral en wervende taal en polemologische taal. Taal is een ruime wereld. Hoeveel talen zijn er niet, die alleen gedachten uitdrukken en blijkbaar functioneren. En ze lachen erbij.
