greeting

Non-PRO English to Arabic Other
I've just got to know someone called Mohammed from Morocco, and I'd like to please him by being able to greet him in a friendly manner in his own language.

Any help much appreciated!

Pronunciation Thanks a lot, Fuad, for your prompt first reply!

Please could I ask you for help with the pronunciation 'salam' I think I can manage, but what about your second suggestion, for later on?

Thanks a lot!

SALAM

The stress in on the second syllable.

That would be the easiest to learn and most pleasant to hear. The word means "peace."

Later on when you feel ready to broaden your repertoire, you can try the expanded version: ASSALAMU ALAYKUM.

Please notice that greeting notions vary across the Arab landscape, so it would be appropriate to ask your friend about specfically Moroccan greetings.

Pronunciation guide for the greeting ASSALAMU ALAYKUM:

ASSALAMU: All vowels are short except the last A. The primary stress is on the third syllable -LA-. The first syllable receives secondary stress. Resist the tendency to pronounce the first syllable ASS- like the word \"ass.\" The A is short. It is the two S\'s that receive the emphasis, more like the word \"us.\"

ALAYKUM: All vowels are short. The stress is on the second syllable -LAY-. You can pronunce LAY like the word \"lay\" or like the word \"lie\" when pronounced by a Scotsman.
