EOD stands for “Explosive Ordnance Disposal.” Look at the following:

As you can see from the above excerpt, the function of EOD is to safely dispose of explosive ordnance, especially as deployed by criminal or "enemy" elements. The American Heritage Dictionary defines “Ordnance” as “military materiel, such as weapons, ammunition, combat vehicles, and equipment.” Based on this definition, "explosive ordnance" is simply a fancy expression for "explosives."

Based on the above, I would translate EOD Team as FAREEQ AL-TAKHALLUS MIN AL-MUTAFAJJIRAT.

In regards to the interesting and familiar subject in this thread, may I offer some distinctive terms that are commonly used in the emerging field of "special operations" by U.S. and other countries' military and security organizations (but unfortunately used interchangeably by media persons and others outside the "business" of security and protection:

1. Anti-terrorism operations

3maliyaat muDHaad al-irhaab
(sometimes "... lilirhaab")

(Protective and defensive measures to deter, prevent, delay or thwart attempts at terrorist acts)

2. Counterterrorism (CT) operations

3maliiyaat mukaafiHat al-irhaab

The expression literally "operations to combat and eliminate terrorism" (NOT primarily or necessarily rescue of the hostages, a la the EgyptAir incident in Larnaca, Cyprus, 1986)

(CT operations are active responses, usually involving isolation and assault on the terrorists after they have committed an act, i.e. hijacking a vehicle or seized a group of hostages.)

3. Weapons of mass destruction (WMD)

asliHat al-dimaar al-shaamil

Assault force = قوة الاقتحام

In practice, the more common (and contextually-correct) term is:
'assault section' = قسم الاقتحام

'Assault section' is more applicable
since that type of unit would be part of an integrated force or special reponse unit that would include other sections and teams, such as command section, signal communications section, medical section, security section, sniper section, and the like (a la the SWAT units of large cities' police departments and a few military units).

counterterrorism unit:

وحدة مكافحة الإرهاب

alternately (but less commonly used)

وحدة مقاومة الإرهاب

counterterrorism (noun):

مكافحة الإرهب

hostage rescue:

إنقاذ رهائن
