The carriers' reasoning is simple. "They want to get paid as much as they can for every bit that crosses the network," says Phil McKiney, CTO of HP's Network and Service Provider Solutions Unit. As an existing provider of outsourced IT services, HP is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the carriers' search for new business models, and it's playing both sides, working with carriers to roll out new services, while at the same time helping enterprises adjust their applications to work with them.
