talc was often contaminated with asbestos-like trace material, an inorganic agent known to produce tumours. How? Basically, talc is a mineral produced by the mining of talc rocks which are then processed by crushing, drying and milling to eliminate a number
of trace minerals.
However, this process does not separate minute fibres which are very similar to asbestos. Hence, talc is closely related to the potent carcinogen asbestos.

Il me semble qu'on parle souvent de "substance présente à l'état de trace"... On trouve aussi sur Google "matériaux en trace", et le Larousse indique "élément trace", dans un contexte géologique.

It doesn't seem to be an error in your text. Apparently, all the other traces of minerals contained in the talc must be eradicated to improve its purity and preserve its properties. Yet the treatment is not concerned with the organics possibly contained in the extracted rock. In the same way, you cannot limitate the extraction of trace mineral to solely trace elements.
