Well, um, I kind of fell over and sort of landed badly on my ankle, which, er, was what, basically, caused my injury.

Fortunately, I am coming to an end of listing the fillers in common educated/uneducated speech; the above is hard to break up into two idioms so i give it in full. But, as can be seen, the main question centres around 'sort of/kind of' and 'basically' - oh, so common both!

Discussion

ELENI KRAVARITI Jun 20, 2011:
well actually "παίχτηκε σκηνικό" does not necessarily mean "έγινε φασαρία" any more....it can be used to describe about everything that might seem interesting...
both φάση and σκηνικό as used in everyday language mean situation, scene, κατάσταση, εικόνα, γεγονότα σε εξέλιξη ...
κόψε φάση is used with the meaning : imagine. make a picture in your mind....
σκηνικό as in theatre scenery sets the picture.....
κόψε here means imagine/or pay attention....
έπαιξε means happenned.....

Hellinas (asker) Jun 20, 2011:
Eleni, can you give me a fairly literal meaning of the phrases:-έπαιξε φάση/σκηνικό τύπου.. and κόψε κόψε φάση / σκηνικό. They seem to me to be derived from drama [does φάση / σκηνικό mean 'a change in fortune??]. Beyond this I am wholly flummoxed. It looks like a very important slang idiom. I know παίχτηκε σκηνικό = έγινε φασαρία but that is all. Thanks.

Ε, έπαιξε φάση/σκηνικό τύπου σκόνταψα και έσκασα (ολόκληρος/μεγαλειωδώς) πάνω...ε και βασικά έτσι...

το "βασικά" χρησιμοποιείται ακόμη αρκετά συχνά

ε και φυσικά στις διηγήσεις τους το ΄"κόψε φάση / σκηνικό " έχουν την τιμητική τους

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to MGPD for the translation and multiple suggestions. But the answer given by Eleni with two peer agreements is my choice. The note Eleni added at my request is very helpful. I need a good dictionary of idioms English-Greek and Greek to English. I have two but one is jargon of the Piatsa and the other - recently published - not really up to my expectations. Meanings of words, however, change so quickly. You can't freeze a spoken language. From one of such dictionaries I got the phrase παίχτηκε σκηνικό = έγινε φασαρία but clearly σκηνικό can now have a positive as well as a negative significance."
