English term

line rail

English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
"Below the jack beam clamps and workhead locks we have three more push buttons. The one for liner turns the power on so the machine can line track. The center button is bias. When you press this button we apply air to the air cylinders at the rear of the machine and into mask position to shove the rail follower wheels over to our selected line rail here, which is right, which would be to the right side of the machine."

What does the word "line" in "line rail" mean?
This is a part of a railroad machine manual.

Thank you very much!

A complete guess, but from the explanation given in your context, I would imagine it means 'the rail that is being used as the guide for setting the gauge at this particualr point'.

Presumably the machine takes its reference from one or the other rail, and adjust the position of the other to maintain the correct spacing. This might be the case, say, when going round curves, where I imagine they might follow whichever rail is on the inside of the curve (for example).

Hope this helps put you on the right track :-))

agree juvera : Track construction sequence: 1.Place line rail on tie plates, spike in place. 2.Install joint bars & tighten bolts. 3.Install the opposite rail... So it is the rail being used as a reference, the first to be installed, the main rail.

Thanks, Juvera! I'm so pleased my hunch turned out to be right :-)
agree Ken Cox : way too much modesty, Dusty -- why not for grading?
