More context is needed I think more context might help. For example, what is the next “defining characteristic” in the list?
B D Finch Apr 17, 2011:
Error in source? To me the phrase "perception of reality testing" seems wrong and ambiguous. Does it mean testing one's perception of reality? Does it mean perception of one's testing of reality? Perhaps, perception of the results of one's testing of reality? The only google hits for the phrase seem to reference the source text or this question.

difficulty in testing one's own perceptions against what trusted others think.

Reality testing is a coping skill by which individuals gauge the validity of their perceptions in comparison with those of trusted others. People who are severely paranoid have great difficulty recognizing that their perceptions are flawed and they have difficulties with reality testing.

neutral B D Finch : Though that is what your reference says, it is wrong. There are many forms of reality testing, many don't involve referring to "trusted others", e.g. testing whether an action produces expected results, logic etc.
