English term

Adjunctive x adjuvant

English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
G'day everyone

Does adjunctive and adjuvant mean the same thing (i.e. are they simply synonyms) when referring to treatment?

Thanks

They are not simply synonyms.

Adjunctive treatment refers to any treatment used with another therapy.
Adjuvant treatment has two meanings: It refers to a complementary treatment (synonym) or it can be used specifically in cancer as chemotherapy after surgery. In this case it can be a synonym of adjuvant chemotherapy.
So, it might depend on the context.

complementary/supplementary

I'm Italian but wold like to give my contribution as well.
Although both terms may be used in many occasions, more specifically refers to complementary, synergistic, while adjuvant ie extra, supplementary. adjuvant has also an enhancing role in biochemistry. http://onlinedictionary.datasegment.com/word/adjuvant
