English term

drowning in a digital sea of molten neon

English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Can you please rephrase this for me?

At night, it looks like the whole city is on fire, a 22nd-century vision from Blade Runner drowning in a digital sea of molten neon.

Discussion

Alaa Zeineldine Sep 17, 2008:
Do you actually want to rephrase it, or do you just need the meaning explained.
axies Sep 17, 2008:
Nothing like the original. I agree fully with Gary D.
Gary D Sep 17, 2008:
PLEASE DON"T REPHRASE IT ... It is such a wonderful line.. You will kill the persons phrase if you do. A true poet wrote this, It is absolutely a wonderful line. I wish I wrote it....

the colours from the neon lights of the city looked like a sea of light

I think it is a very good image as it is and at best can paraphrase it.

Thanks debrite
agree Ken Cox : and 'digital' in this sort of context is more or less synonymous with 'computerised'

the lights turned the city into a coloured digital sea

I turned it simpler; I believe the meaning of the sentence isn't lost or changed.

Best to keep the original - though

The URL is for a photo from the movie 'Blade Runner'. If you are not familiar with that movie, there is a lot of information about it on the web.

You may also want to consider listing questions like this under the 'Literature' category, as there are many additional colleagues who may have other ideas to offer you from that camp. There may be someone who is very familiar with Ridley Scott, author of the Blade Runner series, who could offer additional insight.

agree Ken Cox : 'literature' or 'journalism' would certainly be better categories
