Hier geht es um zwei Unternehmen, deren Aktien eine Zeitlang, aufgrund gewisser misslicher Umstände, billiger erworben werden konnten und dann in die Höhe schnellten, nachdem sie sich wieder erholt hatten. Ich verstehe nicht, was der folgende Satz mir nun wirklich sagen will:

Chugging right along can also mean that the results aren't all that bad - not spectacular, but solid, just like the little engine that could - it chugged along, and at the end of the day, was sucessful.
In other words, the core businesses keep on going, and form a solid base.
A hard one to translate if you don't have any other information - the other interpretation may also be true.
