Kenneth's point is well made but this is not a common, immediately intelligible term in English (taken as it is from German) and also 'Staffage' in German frequently has a pejorative implication of 'window-dressing/padding' etc. which seems relevant here because of the contrast with the genuine observations of Y.

FWIW, 'staffage' is listed in the Oxford Dictionary of English with the definition 'accessory items in a painting, especially figures or animals in a landscape picture'.
