German term

Schaltebene

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Automotive
This is from a car brochure. Does anyone have any idea what "Schaltebene" means in this context? Thanks, Ian

"Auch bei diesem automatisierten Getriebe erlaubt der Schalthebel außerdem manuelle Gangwechsel in einer Schaltebene: Nach vorn geschoben erteilt er den Befehl zum Hochschalten, nach hinten gezogen zum Herunterschalten."

switching plane

It refers to the gear lever working in only one (imaginary) (vertical) plane - moving only forward and backward - unlike other automatic gearbox levers whose various positions are rather in a 3D configuration (they have those complex-shaped slots which direct the movement of the gear lever).

IMO you could skip 'Shaltebene' completely, though: like 'the gear level allows also manual switching: push forward to change up or pull backward to change down'

As I\'m re-reading it now, you really don\'t need to use \'switching plane\' - sounds clumsy. Youcould eventually use \'switching in one plane\' or \'(lever) movement in one plane\'... okay, whatever... I\'d dump it altogether anyway :)

normally a "Schaltebene" is a contact plate

but in this context it's not what's asked for: here, I think, Ebene is Level so i.e. it's most likely "shifting gear (in one) level" or "switching level" (most likely the first one)
