Commander Lumley Robinson of Leeds "The original Jubilee Clip was invented by Commander Lumley Robinson of the British Royal Navy, who was granted the first patent for the device by the London Patent Office in 1921... Lumley Robinson was born in Leeds, Yorkshire in 1877..."

Eloise, Avengers and cricket Question 7 was easy - I grew up there (a particularly dark, satanic mill town)! Both of them also played for Pudsey St Lawrence - but how could they forget John Tunnicliffe?

Question X: What do Emma Peel and Eloise have in common?

Diana Rigg and Paul and Barry Ryan all went to Fulneck School in Pudsey - just around the corner from my former local, the Bankhouse

And was Jerusalem builded here? Apparently, there are more acres in Yorkshire than letters in t' Bible.

Andrew UK companies use the expression shear band, too.
"Band-Seal flexible repair couplings consist of moulded synthetic elastomeric sleeves and stainless steel clamping bands. Standard Couplings also include a stainless steel shear band. "

Though you'll probably hold it against me that the company is in Yorkshire, and that doesn't count as England :-)
Yorkshireman Nov 10, 2013:
Jubilee clip That's the name my grandpa used for them - post it as an answer, Andrew.
Lancashireman Nov 10, 2013:
Could be a UK/US thing 'Band' sounds distinctly American to me.
freekfluweel Nov 10, 2013:
@AS jubilee clip/hose clamp/hose clip/shear band/screw band, a lot of names for the same thing...

(if used i.c.w. a hose, then I'd go for "hose clamp")
Lancashireman Nov 10, 2013:
Jubilee clip Has this been suggested anywhere on this (rather full) page? Because if not, I might just post it as an answer. See images: http://tinyurl.com/ocznew9
Yorkshireman Nov 10, 2013:
Confirmed That looks just like the things in the links I posted - the translation is easier than we thought, they are shear bands.

I would now up the confidence rating in my answer to Absolutely Certain - if I could :-)

Yes, it looks like this one in your link.

shear band

With so little context, it's difficult to say what's meant here.

There are plenty of ghits about shear bands (though I would ignore the geological/geophysical entries in this case).

The article about shear bands in aluminium/aluminum sheets posted as a web reference seems to be the most promising

Further research now makes me reasonably certain that it is the adjustable collar used for tightening couplings between two pipes.

It's been around since at least 1790, when this book was published - here its a band around the wood trails of a cart applied for strengthening. Some of the other words in there are strange, to say the least.

Here's a Tri-lingual patent:

4. Coupling as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3,
characterised in that the sleeve casing (1) as a whole is a round cylinder in shape and, on its outside, adjacent to the respective sleeve ends (11, 12), has a respective shallow groove for reception of a narrow tension strip (21, 22), wherein the middle region of the sleeve casing (1) can be used to receive a broad shear band (23).

neutral freekfluweel : Could easily be mixed up with a physics phenomenon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shear_band Google just "shear band" //"slang" here is "hose" NOT "snake"!

And a cutting effect when cutting metals and a geological effect in fault planes - but it is what it is :-) You surprise me, I thought snake clipping was a national sport! :-) :-) And a broekslang is a trouser hose? I much prefer the Dutch "Snake Clip"

(worm-drive) hose clip / hose clamp

I fear that calling it a Jubilee clip might be akin to calling a vacuum cleaner a Hoover.
I am posting this because I do not believe that 'band' does the item justice.

In many countries, Jubilee Clips tend to be known almost exclusively by their brand name, but elsewhere (where the brand is not so well known for example), they are known by generic names such as worm drive hose clip or hose clamp or hose clip. The Jubilee Clip dominated the market to the point where the brand name is often used instead of the generic term "hose clamp", particularly in the United Kingdom, Ireland and in some of the former British Colonies. It remains the term used in everyday speech in the UK and Ireland.
