I am translating a birth certificate.
It is issued by the "Standesamt Pabianitz" in 1944 when it was part of the Deutsche Reich. Nowadays Pabianice is in Poland.

Are there any rules as to what version of the name I should use in the English translation (intended for submission to the authorities in Australia)?

Pabianice
As you will have seen the name Pabianitz was used only between 1939-1940, ie during WWII. If you want to be very precise and if a German person in in question, you can include this information in a footnote. The situation is the same as if you wanted to write he was born in, say, Warschau (Warsaw or Polish Warszawa). During the second world war the city was called Warschau. Would you then write he was born in Warschau, knowing it was during occupation period?
