This is from a text about plans to restructure the river Emscher. I'm not sure what "Meideraum" means exactly and would appreciate any explanations and/or suggestions as to how to translate it. I can only imagine that it refers to less presentable parts of the river.
I'm not sure about "Vorzeigeraum" either, but I suspect that the explanation for "Meideraum" will make this clear.
Many thanks
Ian

Ian, you aure right in your assumption.
Meideraum - ein Wortspiel, der Raum, die Region ist zu ' vermeiden', to be avoided, because one feels embarrassed, it is not very presentable there- 'Vorzeigeraum' is exactly the opposite. Be sure to recognize that this is refers not only the river but to the whole region, the Emscher region, a historically heavily industrialiyed region (Rhein-Ruhr-Emscher) . Good luck !

May I also add: From skid row to first place...
