I believe the author did not have the ability to make superscripts. (-1) is to the minus first power, meaning per, just like kilometers per hour would be km hr-1. ha-1 then stands for per hectare.
The first (-1) is * the times sign. The whole thing is a unit. See the example below:

Bo tak się zastanawiam: jeżeli w tekście mam liczbę sadzonek i mam powierzchnię pola, to jaki związek może istnieć między sadzonkami a powierzchnią? Co poeta chciał wyrazić? ;-)
