Discussion

Jack slep Sep 1, 2006:
So does cardio (G) vascular (L) - We either steal words or make them up, e.g., Kleenex (TM), now a generic term, kleenex; Fiberglas (TM), fiberglass, etc. Better than grunting - sometimes!
Cortejo Sep 1, 2006:
Yep, it makes sense. It just sounded weird to me as a greek-latin-english word...
Jack slep Sep 1, 2006:
As I've said before, new words are and need to be created; otherwise we'd still be carrying a club and grunting. As long as the originator defines the term, as is the case here, he/she can call it anything that's desired.
Jack slep Sep 1, 2006:
A cultivar is a cultivated variety, such as grape Pinot Chardonnay, Niagra, etc. Cenose, coenosis, cenosis is a community. As its definition says, Ampelocenose is a COMMUNITY of grape plants of some variety or GROUP of varieties (cultivars).
Cortejo Aug 30, 2006:
I have just one question: what "cenose" or "cenosis" is supposed to mean? "Ampelos"(gr.) means garpevine in general. Maybe I'm wrong, but (grape)"cultivar" seems to mean exactly what "ампелоценоз" does. And it is used in Greece(!), as Sergey mentioned.
Cortejo Aug 30, 2006:
Well, that's interesting: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ampelo cenosis
I think there is a specific term, I'm still looking for it. But "ampelo cenosis" is no good.
Leila Usmanova Aug 30, 2006:
соответственно и слово состоит из двух корней ampelo cenosis (сообщество ампельных).

Сергей Лузан Aug 30, 2006:
Я тоже пробовал оба варианта, причём как в единственном, так и во множественном числе в поисковиках. На русском по гуглу, кстати, прошло всего три хита.Перевёл по частям с проверкой через 3 словаря. Неужели есть какой-то чисто винодельческий термин проще?
Ilyanna (asker) Aug 30, 2006:
Ampelocenosis пробовала - ни одного совпадения в поисковых системах.

Thank you for your interesting research, Jack! Read it with interest, but 'Ampelography' gave the clue to understanding. Same register as the source, though it bears the idea of 'grape cultivar'.
agree Cortejo : "-cenose"

Correction: Evidently "ampelo-" dosn't refer to Ampelopsis but to grapevines in general. Therefore I'm with Sergey's "ampelocoenosis" (-cenosis, -cenose, the latter being preferred here). We have biocenose, biogeocenose, agrocenose, entomocenose, etc. - why not "ampelocenose," assuming those interested know the meaning of "ampelo."
