Russian term
распетушиться как кочет
Russian to English
Art/Literary
Other
"А он распетушился, как расхрабрившийся кочет. Осталось только взлететь на стол, захлопать крыльями, издать победоносное «кукареку» и ждать, что все наседки слетятся к нему."
кочет=петух
context: An arrogant man is being compared to a rooster. He kept talking in a condescending manner praising himself more and more.
As a side note, does this comparison make sense in English at all?
Thanks.

was (like) a fighting rooster in full display
He was like a fighting rooster in full display.
And now he was a fighting rooster in full display.
He was like a fighting cock in full display.
And now he was a fighting cock in full display.
I would go with "rooster," not because of the more off-color connotations of "cock" (which may be invoked deliberately, cf. Melville's story "Cock-a-doodle-do," which contains the exclamation, "Oh noble cock, oh noble man!"), but because you're about to need to write "cock-a-doodle-do" for "кукареку," and the "rooster/cock-a-doodle" sequence sounds better to me than "cock/cock-a-doodle," if you see what I mean.

You could omit "fighting," too.

displayed his feathers like the proverbial proud peacock
Because this is about pride, I would go with the peacock over the other birds.
