Spanish term

Capitán de Navío LT

Spanish to English Other Military / Defense rank in Chilean Navy
A rank used by Gobernadores Marítimos in Chile: see, e.g., https://www.directemar.cl/index.php?option=com_content&view=...

Capitán de Navío is simply Captain, or Ship-of-the-Line Captain if one needs to be more specific, a NATO OF-5 rank: but what does the "LT" stand for?

Discussion

Charles Davis Sep 10, 2014:
@ Peter Some have LT and some don't. Not all of them are Capitanes de Navío either; there's the odd Capitán de Fragata. I've only looked at a few, but the current Gobernadores Marítimos of Iquique, Coquera and Coquimbo all have LT after their rank, as well as the one for Antofagasta, which Nigel posted (and the one for Punto Arenas, which I posted in my answer).
Charles Davis Sep 10, 2014:
@ Nigel That's because LT is not a rank but a branch of the navy.
Peter Guest Sep 10, 2014:
Lugar Teniente? lugarteniente?
Nigel Wheatley (asker) Sep 10, 2014:
LT used with other ranks Looking through the sections on "Capitanías de puerto" I see that "LT" is used here as well, with lower naval ranks.
Peter Guest Sep 10, 2014:
dunno but in the gallery on previous commenders, none of the captains have LT after their names. Perhaps you could just leave it off. Or perhaps somebody with direct experience of the Chilean navy could clear it up...

Captain (Littoral / Inshore Service)

"Captain" alone is fine for the rank Capitán de Navió. (No need to add "naval", in my opinion; it will be clear that it refers to the navy.) That's what the equivalent is called in the RN, the US Navy and Commonwealth navies. "Ship-of-the-Line Captain" if you like, but I don't see the need; "Captain" alone is not ambiguous.

LT means "Litoral". These letters after the rank usually refer to a branch of the service. I think you could translate it literally. Both "littoral" and "inshore" are terms used in the RN and the US Navy.

"El Gobernador Marítimo de Punta Arenas, Capitán de Navío Litoral (LT) Jorge Imhoff Leyton [...]"

Actually I'd be inclined not to put "Ship-of-the-Line", because these Gobernadores Marítimos are not in charge of a ship at all; it's just a rank.

A couple more references to confirm the meaning of "LT":

LT (litoral) is one of several naval "escalafones". There's also Ejecutivos e Ingenieros Navales, Abastecimiento (AB), Infantería de Marina (IM), Sanidad de la Armada (SN). See the last source cited for some of these. There must be a complete list somewhere.

Naval Captain

It does not mean that the person is the captain of a ship. It is a military rank in the Navy which is equivalent to a Colonel in the Army.
