"To do a wash" is not as common, but equally as correct. However, to be safe, I'd say "do the laundry."

Front loading machines tend to use less water than top loading ones. Check your meter reading before you do a load of washing and again when you\'ve finished to get an idea of how much water you use each time you do a load of washing.
