soporta (in this context)

Spanish to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
Hi everyone,

This appears in a text I'm translating about surf breaks in the Basque Country:

La rompiente en esta playa ***soporta*** grandes marejadas, pero cuando las olas son demasiado grandes suele haber corrientes muy fuertes

My attempt: The break on this beach is able to bear (?) heavy swells, but when the waves are too big there are usually very strong currents.

Many thanks in advance.

withstand

Another option.

with·stand
/wiTHˈstand/
Verb
Remain undamaged or unaffected by; resist: "designed to withstand winds of 100 mph".
Offer strong resistance or opposition to (someone or something).
Synonyms
resist - stand - endure - hold out - bear - oppose

Breakwaters are built out in the sea, usually parallel to the coast or sometimes angled to the shoreline. They are usually made of interlocking concrete shapes or large boulders. Generally, they are more expensive than groynes or seawalls because they are of massive construction designed to withstand breaking waves.

Sandy beaches are one of the most variable, unpredictable and
fragile of coastal systems. It is generally acknowledged that
beaches tend to erode under high-energy conditions. However, the ability of beaches to withstand extreme events can
differ strongly from one site to another (Regnauld et al.2004).
Moreover, erosion rates often depend on the beach state,
engineering structures and previous beach nourishments.
