they are/constitute the light and life/heart of.... [+ more below]

they are the heart and lungs [a little poetic licence here, which might be judicious for the sake of readability!]

they provide the light and life [if you want to keep literal]

they are the nub

they are the heart

(my guess is that you'd need something fairly simple here to give the gist and read well without over-explication)

are the backbone from which the Faculty is suspended as well as being the heart which gives it ...

"... its emotional tone"

or alternatively "... "its feel"

or alternatively "... its sense of identity"

- "atmosférico" can be understood either literally or figuratively. The figurative meaning is that of the heart as the centre of emotion, which is the one I have given above. The other one is the literal meaning, i.e. that the transparent structures let in "atmosphere" i.e. air, as well as light.

In this case the translation would be:

"are the backbone from which the Faculty is suspended as well as being the heart which lets in air and light"

Note: by "suspended" I am just referring to the fact that the organs of the chest and abdomen are slung from the backbone which is their supporting structure; in the case of the building it is used figuratively not literally.

form both the backbone and the heart

Or, if you want to modify the metaphor, "form both the linchpin and the hub"
