What's new this week:
Dear Members,

This is the ninth update posted on some of the progress being made in the changes to the ProZ.com job posting system. Previous updates are listed under the "Updates" section at http://www.proz.com/about/ipetition/changes

What's new this week:

  • The following ProZ.com Wiki articles were started:

    1. Detecting and reacting to false job offers and other scams

    2. Performing free test translations

    3. Test translations as tools for agencies

    4. Your business plan

    5. All are welcome and encouraged to add to these articles to create resources that will help translators in these subject areas.

  • Calls for collaboration in working to improve translator livelihood were sent out, using the Professional translator resources list as a starting point. Individuals and organizations listed there were sent an invitation to collaborate in building a body of knowledge aimed at assisting professional translators in key areas. The invitation that went out looked like this:

As you may know, a petition concerning the ProZ.com job posting system was submitted to the ProZ.com site team in early March of this year. Goals were identified and a plan was developed to make certain changes to the job posting system and to help stimulate collaboration among translators. A summary of the changes, and the objectives behind the changes, can be seen at http://www.proz.com/about/ipetition/

One of the goals of these changes is to encourage further, ongoing industry-wide cooperation to support the livelihood of professional translators. With this goal in mind, a list of individuals and groups active in this area was started, with the input of members of the ProZ.com community. (The name of the site, blog, or organization) was included in this list: http://wiki.proz.com/wiki/index.php/Professional_translator_resources

The ProZ.com Wiki is intended as a tool along these lines, to enable professional translators to bring together and share their collective knowledge of translation industry topics. Already some articles have been started and are being worked on by members of the community, for example:

(The name of the site, blog, or organization) has been identified by members of the community as one which cares about, and is active in work aimed at improving the livelihood of professional translators. As such, I would like to ask for your help in this collective endeavor: Would you be willing to collaborate with the ProZ.com community in building on articles such as those above and in sharing experience and material through the wiki platform?

Subject matters which would be of particular interest and use to translators include:

    1. differentiation on the basis of quality

    2. establishing a more direct correlation between quality and price

    3. techniques for boosting productivity

    4. marketing / negotiation / business skills for translators

Suggestions or recommendations on other collaborative possibilities in these areas are also welcome, as are additions of other active individuals or groups to http://wiki.proz.com/wiki/index.php/Professional_translator_resources

If you have any questions or doubts, please do not hesitate to contact me, and I'd like to thank you in advance for considering this call for collaboration.

I would like to thank member Riccardo Schiaffino of About Translation and Translation Quality Blog for his positive response to this invitation. I look forward to reporting on further responses soon.

I would also like to extend, once more, the invitation above to the ProZ.com community at large. There is much that can be done, many experienced professionals, and tools available to make this collaboration possible. All are encouraged to add to the Professional translator resources list, and to add to the knowledge base of the wiki. To any who may need help in doing so, please do not hesitate to contact staff using the support system.

Details on the changes to the job posting system, staff reaction, and member involvement and input can all be seen on the changes to be made to the ProZ.com job posting system pages. If you have not done so already, you may subscribe to the above pages to receive email notification when updates are made or new information is added.

Thanks to ProZ.com members for their support of the site and these initiatives. Until next week!

Regards,

Jared

All the job done till now is impressive. Congratulations.

I'd like to know if something has been already foreseen for kudoz questions/answers

Some people often do not grade answers saying they have found the answer elsewhere.

All the best to you

KudoZ changes fall outside this area, but you can expect them Jun 14, 2010

Hello Grazia,

The issue you mention falls outside of the job posting system changes themselves (and this thread), but there are changes in the pipeline which would help address this. They will be announced in the KudoZ forum when released. Thanks!

Jared
