A project has been launched in cooperation with this team to create a multi-language glossary on Tourism and Travel within the framework of the Glossary Building KudoZ (GBK), described in a special section of the FAQs.
GBK were created to enable specialists who are native in English to create dedicated glossaries in English, and then to propagate these glossaries into many other languages by translation and voting by specialists in every selected target language.
GBK was designed for the creation of multi-language glossaries. In particular if a given term is translated, for instance, into Romanian and into Japanese, the glossary equivalents will also be available between these two target languages.
Members of this team will then create terms in English, including the term itself, a definition and one to three example sentences. The translations provided must have the same format and they will be selected by other users by means of peer-grading agree or disagree votes.
When selecting a GBK translation please consider that quality is the main objective here. In this case a fast answer should not be chosen over a better answer. Even if the term has already been provided in another answer, a translation that provides the proper term, a good definition and good example sentences should be chosen.
This experience could be used as the basis for similar projects for the creation of multi-language glossaries in other fields of expertise, provided that the appropriate specialized teams are available and willing to create the source glossary.
Regards,
Enrique

I believe there was totally free entry to that event, wasn't there? I imagine there's no doubt that the team creators are specialists, but what of the other 150 translators? Are we likely to experience similar problems to the ones that beset the general KudoZ glossary? | | | | Enrique Cavalitto Argentina Local time: 09:30 Member (2006) English to Spanish TOPIC STARTER | Tools and opportunities | Aug 20, 2013 |

Hi Sheila,
ProZ.com provides tools and opportunities to translators, agencies and other players in the industry. We strive to get quality but it can't be assured.
I am confident that the source glossary in English will be of good quality, as it will be produced and controlled by a small team of English native speaker who specialize in the subject.
I am a bit more concerned about the selection of the best translation, where some KudoZ players could select the first answer that provided the translated term, even if the definition or example sentences were poor or missing. Ideally the colleagues should vote for the best glossary entry, no matter when it was suggested.

Does this actually concern translators into English at all? I'm not sure we have any part to play in this, have we? You only want input from translators from English to all other languages - is that true? Will there be no 'new' terms input in other languages, for translation into English? It seems a little biased to base the whole thing on specific English terms - after all there are terms that may seem very simple and obvious to translate from English, so they might well be excluded, but maybe ... I'm not sure I've explained that at all clearly. Sorry! I'm just thinking about translation being a two-way process, with 1-to-many, many-to-1 and many-to-many translations as well as the rather rare 1-to-1. ▲ Collapse

Hi Sheila,
When a GBK question is posted for translation from English into French, during the critical first 72 hours participation is limited to users who, according to the data in their profiles:
work in that pair or in the reverse one
report a "specialty" level of expertise in the subject field
are native speakers of English or French
So even when in this particular program all translations are planned from English into other languages (it could be different), translators who work into English are not excluded by the system.

Hi Sheila,
I can confirm that indeed translators who work into English are involved. In fact, yesterday I received notification of a GBK question from Russian to English.
I would be interested in receiving questions in the reverse direction, ie. into English but so far I haven't received any of these types of questions.
Sarah | | | | | It depends what you mean by 'involved' | Sep 2, 2013 |
If into-English are sent questions that they can't translate, and if the project involves no into-English translation questions, then for all practical purposes, into-English translators are NOT involved. I have received into-Italian questions, but since I translate IT>EN not EN>IT, I shall not be answering them.

Beware the Chinese whisper effect, too. If an English term has been translated both into Japanese and into Romanian, it doesn't follow that the Japanese and Romanian terms will necessarily be good mutual equivalents with the same nuances and connotations. ▲ Collapse

Four terms were posted in GBK from the Tourism and travel team, and more terms will be offered to the community for translation if this team selects and formats them.
